| Each day of the year in the Maya calendar consists of four glyphs that give each day a name. The first two glyphs come from a 260-day ceremonial calendar, known as the Tzolkin. The last two glyphs are from the 365-day solar calendar, the Haab'. With this dual calendar system, the 260 ceremonial Tzolkin and the 365-day Haab'', each day has a unique name, Tzolkin plus Haab'', that is not repeated for fifty-two years. | Cada día del año en el calendario maya está compuesto de cuatro glifos, los cuales le otorgan a cada día su nombre. | The first two glyphs represent the day in the Tzolkin calendar. The first glyph is a number while the second is the day-name. The numbers run from one to thirteen and then repeat. There are twenty day-names that rotate in order and then repeat. Thirteen times twenty is 260. Each number is linked with each of the twenty day-names at some point in the 260-day cycle. | Los primeros dos glifos representan la anotación del día en el Tzolkin. | The last two glyphs of each day are the day in the 365-day solar, or Haab', calendar. The last glyph is the name of the month. There are eighteen months of twenty days each, which equals 360 days. There is also one month of five days—days that are considered unlucky—that brings the total to 365 days. The third glyph is the number of the day within the month, but the days don’t run from one to twenty, rather zero to nineteen. The first day of the month, zero, is called the seating of the month and is represented by the glyph chum not the glyph for zero. | Los últimos dos glifos para cada día expresan el día en el Haab', el calendario solar de 365 días. | The names of Mayan glyphs vary in the different Mayan languages. Most of the artists represented in this site are Tz’utuhil Maya, so we have chosen to write the names of the glyphs in Tz’utuhil. These names are often similar to the Yukateko names that are used by most archeologists. The names of the days and months are listed below both Tz’utuhil and Yukateko Mayan. | Los nombres de los glifos mayas son diferentes en los diferentes idiomas mayas. | There is a still unresolved controversy about the correspondence of the days of the Gregorian calendar to the Maya calendar. Most archeologists and scholars agree to one correspondence while most Maya priests and day-keepers another. The Maya day-keepers, who have continuously kept count of the days for millennium, differ by two days from the dates based on astronomical calculations. We have decided to follow the correspondence of the Maya day keepers so that you will know when the present day Maya New Year ceremonies take place in Guatemala. If you wish to convert to the astronomical calendar, you should use the glyphs appearing two days before the date you want. | Todavía existe una controversia sobre la correspondencia entre los días en el calendario gregoriano y el calendario maya.
