Reloading Blackberry Device Software

Reloading BlackBerry® Device Software is sometimes necessary when resolving an issue with a BlackBerry smartphone. If a device is running version 5.0.X for example, then you can reload that same software on the BlackBerry smartphone to resolve some issues.

This is very similar to reformatting the operating system on a computer. If a computer is running Microsoft® Windows® XP you can reinstall Microsoft® Windows® XP back on the computer to try and resolve issues.

You require the following items to reload BlackBerry Device Software to a BlackBerry smartphone:

There are two ways to reload BlackBerry Device Software to a BlackBerry smartphone:

The update process takes 30-45 minutes to complete.

Reload BlackBerry Device Software using BlackBerry Desktop Manager

To reload BlackBerry Device Software to a BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry Desktop Manager, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the http://www.blackberry.com/update web site.
  2. Click Check for Updates.
  3. Select and download the version of BlackBerry Device Software approved by your wireless service provider for use with the BlackBerry smartphone model.
  4. Open the executable file of the software and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  5. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  6. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer using a USB cable.
    Note: do not disconnect the smartphone while reloading software.
  7. When BlackBerry Desktop Manager prompts you to update your smartphone software, complete one of the following steps, depending on your version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager:

    1. When prompted, select Update Now.
    2. If BlackBerry Desktop Manager does not automatically prompt you to update the smartphone software, click Application Loader.
    3. Under Update Software, click Start.

    1. When prompted, select Update my device.
  8. Do any of the following:
    • To keep a backup file of your device data and settings, select the Back up your device data check box. This backup file is restored to your device after the update is complete. If you do not back up your data, your device data, settings, and email messages are deleted from your device after the update is installed.
    • To encrypt your backup data, click Encrypt backup file.
    • If you want to receive an email message when an updated version of BlackBerry Device Software is available, select the Email me when new versions are available check box.
  9. Click Install update.

Reload BlackBerry Device Software using the Internet (web-software loading)

To reload BlackBerry Device Software to a BlackBerry smartphone using the Internet, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the http://www.blackberry.com/update web site.
  2. Click Check for Updates.
  3. Complete the instructions on the screen to perform the software reload.
