Jose Iglesias scratched from today's lineup with shin contusion injury

Less than 48 hours after slamming his right shin into a base during a stolen base attempt against the New York Mets, Jose Iglesias has injured his right shin again. Iglesias was struck in the shin by a line drive off the bat of J.D. Martinez during batting practice today. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus scratched Iglesias from today's Grapefruit League lineup against the Houston Astros.

Like Friday's injury, today's setback is not related to the stress fractures that sidelined Iglesias for the entire 2014 season. Iglesias has reported no shin pain related to running or baseball activities so far this spring, This is a positive sign for the Tigers, who are relying heavily on Iglesias to play a significant chunk of games at shortstop this season. Iglesias hit .259/.306/.348 in 148 plate appearances for the Tigers in 2013. He also produced several highlight-reel plays on defense, leaving many Tigers fans excited for what a full season of action could provide.

While the setback is a bit concerning, a second contusion does not put Iglesias' shins at greater risk for another stress fracture. The injury he suffered last year was related to the repeated stress he put his legs through before and during the season. Iglesias cited workouts in which he ran on sand prior to the 2013 season as what initially caused his shin pain.

The extent of the injury is not yet known. MLive's James Schmehl described the incident in detail.

Iglesias immediately fell to the ground after being struck before walking gingerly -- with assistance from Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand -- back to the clubhouse. He received immediate attention in the trainer's room.

Neither Iglesias nor the Tigers have given a timetable for his return, but odds are he will only miss another day or two before returning to action.

Iglesias is 1-for-4 with an RBI single and a stolen base in two Grapefruit League games so far this spring.
