I would roll an 12'' RE, ported box with alpine door speakers and really any head unit ipod ready. rockford or kenwood amp depending on what your budget is i would run two 600+ watt amps. one solo to your sub then one running your door speakers also get a capacitor so your lights wont be dimming when u hit a big bass note.

For the iPod, your best option will be the DICE iPod Integration Kit which interfaces with the factory wiring through a plug and play connection. This allows you to install the iPod in just about any location on the car and control it through the iPod itself, headunit or steering wheel controls. It allows selection via playlist/artist/genre/all songs etc...and is as flexible as the iPod software itself.

if ur on a budget then this may not be for you.. this would be a top of the line thing

    rough prices here.(name brand)

    12 re - 250$
    2 amps- 600$
    capacitor (30-80$)
    proper high quality wire (40$)
    ported box (100$)
    head unit - (200-300$)

sound system is one of those things you will want to buy name brand things. save the money and you will love what you get. also if you have no idea what ur doing add a 100-150$ on that price for a professional to install it.

my truck has 2 12'' kickers running on a 900 watt fosgate amp and alpine door speakers running on a 800 watt orion in a fiber glass box. with a sony 7'' touch screen deck this was a very expensive set up but it sounds amazing

Sorry if it seems like i'm thread jacking but, how many of you have upgraded your HK sound system and kept your stock HU. I love the look of the stock HU, but I want the functionality of a new HU. Would you guys recommend keeping the stock HU and then replacing the speakers, adding new amps, capacitor, and Sub. I have been contemplating replacing my sound system for some time now but i'm worried about finding speakers that fit my 2000 coupe. Any input would help. Thanks

Once again, wrong forum for this topic, but a sealed box will give you more space in your trunk, ported boxes need more volume.

pphil09 (I think) replaced his stock speakers with the BSW Stage 1 kit (see link Dane provided above). He said he was extremely happy with them. Maybe drop him a PM for more details?

BSW also has a subwoofer kit that mounts to the roof of the trunk. (edit: to clarify, not to the trunk LID, but to the underside of the rear parcel shelf)

I've considered speaker replacements several times, but it's always a little more than I can justify spending. There's always something higher priority on the list.

I won't be replacing my head unit. Aftermarket head units almost always look like crap in the E46 dash - with the exception of double-DIN touchscreen units (which are a significant hassle to install, since you have to move the climate control unit).

I just bought the BSW Stage 1 speaker kit... got a $50.00 coupon from UUC. Hopefully I'll be installing it this weekend.
As Nathan mentioned, they have a subwooker kit that comes with an amp, enclosure and everything you need. It takes the place of the HK subwoofers. It reduces the height of the trunk by several inches but it's a very clean stock looking installation.
If you just want to replace what's there and want it to be completely stock, using stock grilles, etc. Then BSW is the way to go. The stage 1 is a direct replacement with 10 speakers that mount in the original locations and uses the original hardware and connectors. This is why I went with them... I don't feel like ripping everything apart, splicing wires, using mounting adapters, etc. I just don't have time time for all of that.
You can download the installation instructions bor both from thier website so you can see what's involved.
