Abdominal Separation Diastasis Recti

Abdominal Separation diastasis recti

Have you heard of Abdominal Separation - Diastasis Recti?

The connective tissue structure between the six pack - rectus abdominus muscle is called the linea alba. This softens during pregnancy and stretches for foetal growth, resulting in abdominal muscle separation at the midline.

This condition is common with over 66% of women having it in the third trimester and up to 53% immediately after delivery.

Abdominal separation (diastasis) is thought to be due a number of factors including genes that increase ligamentous laxity, multiple babies, large babies and in petite women. Diastasis often occurs with lifting, coughing, straining, incorrect exercise and in 2nd stage of labour when you're bearing down. It can result in abdominal, pelvic and back pain; reduced participation in activities; and fatigue.

The good news is you can help yourself if you have abdominal separation.  Evidence shows that exercise during pregnancy reduced the presence of abdominal diastasis by 35%.

The aim of physiotherapy treatment in pregnancy is to reduce or minimise the progress of the gap width, improve stability and pregnancy posture, reduce any associated pain, provide supports and assist you to continue daily activities.
