Larry Wilmore Asks What We’re All Thinking: Is ‘American Sniper’s’ Chris Kyle A Hero Or An A-Hole?

Sure, sure, I miss The Colbert Report, but Larry Wilmore’s already crushing it on The Nightly ShowLast week he brought up Cosby and the inherent sexism involved in dismissing the alleged victims’ claims. And last night he dove into all the outrage surrounding American Sniper in a segment that questions whether Chris Kyle (played by Bradley Cooper) is a hero or an “asshole” (his words!).

For those of you lucky enough to not have gotten into long conversations about the merits of the movie with people who have never seen it, let me sum it up for you. On one hand, you have the people who think this movie’s a glorious tribute to war. On the other hand, you have the people who are horrified by the glorification of murder. And on the third, less popular hand, you have the people who understand that it’s a little more complex than just yelling “Amurica!” or “propaganda!” over and over again. Decider’s very own Tyler Coates says it best in his review about what message to take from the movie: “What Eastwood’s film doesn’t do is make the argument that they were right or wrong; the events took place, and it’s our job, as viewers, to come to our own philosophical conclusions.”

In his segment on the movie, Wilmore points out that American Sniper is just a movie. And since it is just a movie, we don’t have to take it at face value.  Because, as he reminds people, “You know, if I did, every time I got on a motherfuckin’ plane there would be some motherfuckin’ snakes.”

Where do you land on this debate?
