“This, I submit, is the freedom of real education, of learning how to be well-adjusted: you get to consciously decide what has meaning, and what doesn’t.”

“Koh Panyee is a floating village in the middle of the sea that has not an inch of soil. The kids here loved to watch football but had nowhere to play or practice. But they didn’t let that stop them.”

The Yasuní National Park is arguably the most biologically diverse spot on Earth. It is home to two uncontacted indigenous tribes, the Tagaeri and the Taromenane. But there’s a problem: it is also home to 800 million barrels of crude oil, about 20% of Ecuador’s oil reserves.
Back in 2007, President Rafael Correa launched the Yasuní-ITT initiative: the government would leave the Yasuní untouched if the international community compensated Ecuador with 50% of the profits that it would receive from utilizing the oil reserves, around $3.6 billion, over 12 years. In exchange, Ecuador would give up the other 50% of the profits, it would prevent 400 million metric tones of carbon dioxide from entering the air, and the national park along with the uncontacted peoples living there would remain undisturbed. The initiative came with a plan B, though: if the country did not receive the compensations, it would allow for drilling.
Fast forward to 2013, six years later, a commission evaluated the initiative’s progress concluding that the economic results were not sufficient. Halfway through the 12-year period, only $336 million (9.3%) had been pledged and only $13.3 million (0.37%) had actually been delivered. Correa decided to green light the oil drilling in the national park, in accordance to the plan B.
A lot of people in Ecuador believe that the Yasuní should be left untouched regardless of the economic outcome of the initiative, and there’s a way to do so. If YASunidos, a group of people that defends the Amazon, manages to get 600 thousand Ecuadorean voters to sign a petition for a plebiscite, and a national court deems the question in the plebiscite constitutional, then the Ecuadorean people would be asked if they want to allow oil drilling in the national park or not.
The President has opposed this arguing that Ecuador needs the oil revenues in order to push for progress and fight poverty. He has also argued that only one per thousand of the Yasuní National Park would be intervened by oil companies and that the drilling will be subject to the toughest environmental standards in the industry.
But Ecuador does not have experience enforcing environmental standards for the oil industry. Proof of that is the decades long case against Chevron for polluting the Amazon.
I definitely do not want to risk the Yasuní.
