80s Love Songs - Romantic and wedding love songs from the 80s

Like any good musical period, the 80s had its fair share of love songs. Some were hopelessly cheesy and others can still make people cry. Almost every successful artist of the 80s had penned at least one love song or ballard. With some bands it was hard to tell if the song was about love, sex or drugs.

So, if you are trying to seduce someone in their 30s or 40s who loves their 80s music, here is a list of love songs to get you started. Beware, some are very very soppy. This romantic 80s music list is ideal for Valentines day, a special anniversary, wedding or other romantic occasion.

The Top 10 80s bridal waltz songs and wedding playlist
Sure, you can use the above to create your 80s wedding playlist or see out top 40 lists, but if you are looking for that slower ballard, here is a list of 10 essential wedding love songs to get couples together and people tearing up.

  4. Endless Love - Diana Ross and Lionel Richie
  5. I Want to Know What Love is - Foreigner
  6. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinéad O'Connor (oddly, this song about losing your love, seems to capture wedding and bridal waltz emotions quite nicely)
  7. Careless Whisper - George Michael (this song is also about loss, but is a perfect fit for a wedding)
  8. Up Where We Belong - Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes (almost impossible to dance to, but play it later when people may want to sing along).

  10. Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper
80s Love Songs
  • (I Just) Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew
  • Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) - Phil Collins
  • All of My Heart - ABC
  • Moments In Love -Art Of Noise (moody soundscape, with various remixes up to 12 minutes in length)
  • Atomic - Blondie (time this one for a more upbeat moment: 'Uh-huh make me tonight/Oh, uh-huh make it magnificent/Tonight/Right.' Seduction at it's best)
  • Careless Whisper - George Michael (best line: because guilt feet have no rhythm)
  • Do That To Me One More Time - Captain & Tennille (for the woman who can't get enough)
  • Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Power Of Love (great in-the-moment song)
  • Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston (arrrrgh)
  • Hello - Lionel Ritchie
  • I Just Called To Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder
  • Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode (the mood of this song isn't exactly romantic, but maybe play it if you want a second round)
  • Lady In Red - Chris De Burgh (a song that makes men barf and women swoon)
  • Lady - Kenny Rogers
  • Lost In Love - Air Supply
  • Madness - It Must Be Love (a slightly upbeat song with a few too many appearances in advertising, but still valuable for it's romantic appeal)
  • Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye
  • Slow Hand - Pointer Sisters (favourite lyric: slow hand/easy touch)
  • Take My Breath Away - Berlin
  • The Sweetest Taboo - Sade
  • Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler (again, a bit upbeat for a romantic encounter but a great way to pick up the pace)
  • Up Where We Belong - Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes
  • Waiting For A Girl Like You - Foreigner (for when your hooker is running late)
  • Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler (we advise against this one, in a cliche list even this is too cliched)
  • Woman in Love - Barbra Streisand
When is an 80s love song not a song about love?
While these songs are from the 80s, and sound like they are about love, but a closer listen will show they are not:

  • Why Can't We Live Together, Sade (Racism)
  • Dancing With Tears in my Eyes, Ultravox (Nuclear War)
  • Golden Brown, The Strangers (Heroin)
  • Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd (This turns up on various love-making song lists, but you have to wonder if anyone is listening to the lyrics.)
  • Tainted Love, Soft Cell (To those people who emailed us: this is not an 80s love song. Lyrics 'From the pain that you drive into the heart of me/The love we share /Seems to go nowhere.' Just look at the title of the song. Would you drink tainted milk?)
  • She Works Hard For The Money, Donna Summer (Any guy who plays this on a romantic evening will be having a very lonely night)
