CHESS TOURNAMENT RULES

Chess Tournament Rules:
  1. A new GK tournament is started monthly (on the first Monday of the month). A minimum of 3 wins in any rated games, and at least 6 completed rated games are required to enter the tournament.
  2. There are 5 tournament sections: Grandmaster, Expert, Advanced, Intermediate and Casual. Any player can join the Grandmaster section. Only players with the top rating (over the past 90 days) not exceeding the following limits can join other sections: 2000 for Expert, 1700 for Advanced, 1500 for Intermediate and 1300 for Casual section. If the player's top rating (over the past 90 days) exceeds the limit of their section after the first round, they will be automatically moved to the next higher section. Rating limits are not enforced after the second round on.
  3. All participants will be divided into groups of 4 or 5 players. Everyone will play 2 games (one as black and one as white) against everyone else in their group. 1 point is awarded for every win, ½ point for a draw and no points for a loss. Whoever gets the most points in each group will advance to the next round. In case of a tie, all players with the top score in the group will advance to the next round. If the winner of the group was moved to the higher section due to their rating, the runner-up(s) will advance to the next round instead.
  4. The first 2 rounds will be considered finished when 99% of all games in the corresponding tournament section have been completed. The remaining 1% of games that are still in progress will be automatically adjudicated, and the likely outcome (using a computer engine evaluation) will be recorded in the tournament table as the final result. The games will remain active and can be finished normally, affecting players ratings and stats accordingly at the time they are completed, however such games will no longer affect the tournament table/results. Starting with the 3rd round on, all games have to be completed in the same tournament section before the next round can be started.
  5. All tournament games except for the final round will be played with 2 days per move. The final round games will be 3 days per move. All tournament games are rated, i.e. they will affect your ratings/stats as any other game.
  6. An announcement will be sent via e-mail to all players participating in the tournament round 7 days before it starts. You will need to log in to GameKnot at least once during the 7 days before the round starts or you will be automatically withdrawn from the tournament. If a vacation flag is set for your account at the time of the round start, you don't need to log in and all games in the new round will be automatically postponed for the same number of days.
  7. Purposefully losing or tying tournament games, before the logical conclusion of the game, will result in disqualification of all players involved from the tournament.
  8. Players will not be able to participate in GK tournaments if the number of rated games that they lost in the past 40 days in under 16 moves is either: 20 or more; or 20% or more, out of all rated games finished in the last 40 days.
