The Breakdown

so just 2 weeks to go before another awards and as you may probably know the event is already sold out. the only way you’ll get in is if you come after 11 when the Djs take over.as with last year’s event at Cargo I want to cram as much in as possible –

I thought itworked great last year – what with Steve Reid’s opening through to Zed Bias and Phil Asher smacking it at the end….this year’s line up will revolve around the Robert Mitchell trio who’ll be joined by, amongst others, Alice Russell, Finn Peters and a special guest who’s gonna be receiving the lifetime achievement award (who could that be I wonder??) I’ve invited Stacy Epps over because, apart from being super talented, she also delivered  a brilliant debut all on her own – independent from top to bottom and an inspiration to the next generation…

…as you know, I’ve supported Jazzanova since the beginning and have been greatly inspired by their productions, remixes and general approach to this scene. they’ve been a key ingredient to my club and radio sets from day 1 and are a collective who I consider truly ‘world class’, so it was with great excitement that I heard they’d be going live in support of their second, brilliant album ‘of all the things‘ – its gonna be momentous!

apart from that little lot we’re also going to be turning what is normally the Cargo restaurant into our own mini alternative space aided by Havana Club – so expect high quality rum cocktails whilst enjoying the delights of Cuba’s Kumar as well as the very acoustic Mama Milk from Kyoto and a brilliant new UK singer songwriter in the Nick Drake/Terry Callier tradition, Jonathan Jeremiah – you’ll be hearing a lot more from him this year – so thats the live stuff more or less covered.

There might be more but unless Erykah Badu surprises us by picking up her best album award (highly unlikely as she’s expecting a baby any day!) or QTip decides to cancel his US dates just to come over to pick up best track then we’ll move on to the Dj’s.

Big exclusive is the first appearance in the UK of the Truth and Soul Djs from Brooklyn – thats right Leon Michels is gonna be dropping some fresh new bits from the El Michels affair and beyond – these guys are large! The bPm makes his WW awards debut, having spent2008 re establishing the Bar Rumba mondays and causing quite a stir at the WW festival in Sete last July. Laurent Garnier‘s gonna drop a cheeky selection before going off and playing at the End closing party – you know he’s my favorite don’t you… and I’ve asked original Brownswooder Red Rack Em aka Marlinspike aka Hot Coins in cos he can’t put a foot wrong right now! there will be others too and I’m gonna try and get a set in myself as well this year!

as always big love to everyone at Cargo, Jonathan at KSwiss, Beccy G and the radio 1 engineers, Simon Goffe and Peggy for getting stuck in and sorting the whole shebang out whilst I’ve been partying in Asia! and before I forget visuals as ever will be organized by the one and only Swifty – its gonna be BIG!!!!
