See, thatā€™s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I donā€™t wanna

Can we talk for a sec about gendered expectations + makeup??

So fascinating that some of us start off rejecting makeup for one reason or another - it’s too “feminine” or it’s not “me” - and then end up embracing it later on as we become more comfortable in our own identities and gender expressions.

I found out about box theory recently and I found it really neat.

But I don't find it useful personally. The imagery of the box and the idea that the box is individualized don't work for me at all.

So, I thought I would share my personal way of conceptualizing labels.

Essentially, you view all the LGBTQ+ labels as tools in a gigantic toolbox.

You can go through it and grab the tool you want to complete the project you are doing.

Two people may grab the exact same tool for projects that could not be more different.

Two people may grab completely different tools for exactly the same project.

And, of course, two people could grab exactly the same tools for exactly the same project.

And any variation/combination of any of those.

The important thing to remember is that there is no universally correct tool to use. Grab a hammer to unscrew a screw. Grab a screwdriver to remove a nail. Use a tape measure to etch a piece of art. Use 20 different tools for one task. Go wild. If it works best for you, it is the best tool for the job, even if other people would never use it that way. You're the one doing the job, so use the tool(s) that help you.

If someone criticizes the way that you are completing your own personal project, then they are just being annoying and pretentious.

Labels are just tools of self-description. Mix and match them. Use them in unconventional ways. If anyone cares, it doesn't matter, because the labels you use are for you, not them.

From artist Saif (@saif0_0ali) on Instagram + Tumblr

“Love is stronger than your hate.”

Written in arabic calligraphy over colors of 🏳️‍🌈 the pride flag and two men kissing.

“It’s not a sin to be yourself.”

Written above an image of a dark skin bearded person wearing hijab, make-up and a nostril piercing. Colors of the 🏳️‍⚧️  trans pride flag in the background. A slur for ‘Trans Woman’ written on their cheek. It can also be read to mean ‘Intersex’ or ‘Third Gender’. (In this context it could be a way of reclaiming this slur)

“Trans pride.”

Written in arabic calligraphy with an image of a smiling trans masculine person with mastectomy scars that bleed the colors of 🏳️‍⚧️  trans pride flag.

“God does not make mistakes.”

Written in arabic calligraphy with the image of two women in hijab holding each other closely with colors of 🏳️‍🌈 the pride flag in the background.

Just a lil much-needed queer youth joy - we need to talk about these students and allies in Hawai'i!

Students from Campbell- Kapolei Complex Schools used funding from one of our 50 States 50 Grants to give SO much support to their queer communities.

They bolstered their GSA clubs, held community based education events like a Halloween party and craft day, and even got to attend Honolulu Pride - where Hawai'i-raised Bretman Rock showed up for a surprise visit and marched alongside the students to honor them and their work, having attended the same schools themself growing up!

So proud of these students for recognizing what they need in their own communities.

And lucky for y'allā€¦apps are open for the 3rd season of 50 States, 50 Grants right now through April 1, 2024 - if youā€™re a high schooler or middle schooler in the US/DC/territories and have an idea for how youā€™d use the funds at your own school, donā€™t miss out on applying: 50states50grants.org
