PETERS Scam: Maleik Lamar Simms, 28, of Norfolk, Va., is charged by Peters Township police with access device fraud, theft by deception and forgery. According to the criminal complaint, in November a Peters Township woman reported to police that she saw a car listed for sale on Facebook by an account she believed belonged to an acquaintance. The account requested that the victim pay a $750 downpayment to a Venmo account under Simms’ name. According to police, the original owner of the Facebook account that listed the car was “hacked” and lost access before the post was made. There is an active warrant for Simms’ arrest. Kite Day Saturday at Washington Park

Anyone who is told to go fly a kite will have the perfect opportunity from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the second Kite Day at Washington Park Stone Pavilion. Participants can bring their own kites, but the free event, hosted by the city, will also include a kite-making station. “It’s just a fun day for families,” said DeAnna Martin, Washington recreation director. Washington School Board rescinds Colt Field agreement

Washington School Directors voted to rescind an agreement with the city of Washington to renovate the Colt League baseball field at Washington Park. The 8-1 vote passed Monday, with School Director Amy Roberts casting the lone dissenting vote. “We could theoretically break ground here in a week or two, and once we break ground we’re locked in,” said George Lammay, superintendent of the Washington School District. “(The city) didn’t formally approve it on their end. I told the board that I didn't think it was a wise decision to go forward unless we have something approved that would bind it. Second person charged in Wheeling man’s fatal overdose

A Wheeling, W.Va., man has been charged in connection with another man’s fatal overdose last year. North Strabane Township police charged Alex Thomas Lichwa with felonies of drug delivery resulting in death, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and criminal use of a communication facility. The charges, filed Monday, stem from the March 26, 2023, death of Nathan Wright, 32, of Wheeling. Jenna Marie Hastings also has previously been charged in the case. Police said Wright met Hastings in Wheeling the morning of March 26 and purchased several stamp bags of fentanyl before traveling to Washington County, where he ingested the drugs.
