The natural and artificial universe is comprised of countless systems...and systems of systems. Today, to responsibly and thoughtfully design anything – of any scale - it must be understood as an entity among vast continua of technological, informational, social, economic, political, urban, cultural, infrastructural, and logistical systems.Norbert Wiener defined the field of cybernetics in 1948, but it remained a relatively esoteric field through the rest of the 20th Century, with its relevance to design primarily academic. In the 21st Century, however, the notion of profound interconnectedness is no longer novel. While a system is defined as a “set of interdependent components forming an integrated whole...delineated by spatial and temporal boundaries,” some notable contemporary systems, such as the internet, or the various economic and social systems that enable globalism, for example, are so vast and pervasive as to have little or no definable boundaries, spatial or temporal.
This project emphasize the research, analysis and – in particular - representation of complex systems. Maps - as representational instruments uniquely capable of rendering information relationally - will be employed as models for this work, and will serve as points of inspiration and departure.
